What GEO Actually Means
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It's the practice of making sure your business information is structured clearly enough that a generative AI tool, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and similar tools, can accurately cite or mention your business by name inside its own generated response.
The key word there is generative. This isn't happening on a search results page at all. Someone can open ChatGPT directly, ask a question about hiring a contractor, and get an answer with zero involvement from Google or any traditional search engine.
How GEO Differs From SEO and AEO
It helps to line these three up side by side, because the terms get used loosely:
- SEO earns your business a ranked link on a search results page. The customer still clicks through.
- AEO earns your business a pulled, direct answer inside a search engine's own results, like a voice answer or an AI Overview box.
- GEO earns your business a mention inside a generative AI tool's own written response, on any platform, whether or not a search engine was ever involved.
They overlap heavily in practice. The same underlying work, clear content and accurate structured data, feeds all three. GEO is simply the piece aimed specifically at generative AI tools operating independently of search.
Why This Matters for Contractors
More homeowners are starting their research inside an AI chat tool before they ever open a browser tab for Google. Someone comparing quotes, trying to understand a repair, or deciding whether to hire a pro at all might ask an AI assistant those questions first, the same way people used to ask a friend or search a forum.
If your business's information isn't clear and consistent anywhere online, there's nothing solid for that AI tool to cite when the topic comes up. That doesn't mean you'll get mentioned if you fix it, but it does mean you have a real shot at being invisible to these tools if you don't.
What We Actually Work On
GEO work is unglamorous, and that's the point. It's about removing ambiguity, not chasing tricks:
- Clear, factual business information, name, services, service area, and any relevant credentials, published consistently across your website and your listings
- Content that reads like a specific, real answer to a real question, instead of vague ad copy that could describe any company
- Structured data and consistent name, address, and phone information across every page and listing
- Avoiding thin or duplicate content that gives AI systems nothing solid to actually cite
What We Don't Promise
No agency can force ChatGPT, Gemini, or any AI tool to recommend a specific business by name. These are systems we don't operate and can't override. What can be done, and what we focus on, is making your business's information accurate, consistent, and easy for these systems to find and use correctly if and when they do generate an answer about your trade in your area.
A Realistic Starting Point
GEO isn't a separate gimmick you bolt onto a website. It's a long-term extension of the same solid SEO and AEO practices: accurate information, clear structure, and content written to actually answer real questions. Get those fundamentals right and you're doing the only thing that reasonably improves your odds with generative AI tools over time.
