What AEO Actually Means

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It's the practice of structuring content so a "answer engine," a voice assistant, a chatbot, or a search feature like Google's AI Overviews, can pull a direct answer about your business, sometimes without the person ever clicking through to a website at all.

Think about the difference between a person typing "roofers near me" and getting a list of ten links, versus asking their phone "who's a good roofer near me" and getting a single spoken answer. AEO is about giving that second kind of query something solid to work with.

How This Is Different From Traditional SEO

Traditional SEO earns you a ranked spot in a list of results. The customer still has to scan the list, compare a few options, and click one. AEO skips that step. The goal isn't a ranking, it's being the answer itself, or one of a small handful of businesses named directly in a response.

The two aren't competing strategies. Good AEO is mostly built on top of good SEO fundamentals: clear page structure, fast load times, and accurate business information. AEO adds a layer on top that's specifically aimed at how questions get answered, not just how pages get ranked.

Example Questions People Ask AI Assistants

These are the kinds of conversational questions AEO is built around, the sort of thing someone says out loud or types into a chat box instead of a search bar:

  • "Who's a good roofer near me for storm damage repair?"
  • "Is it worth replacing my roof before selling my house?"
  • "What should I ask a roofing contractor before hiring them?"
  • "How much notice do painters usually need before starting a job?"
  • "Do I need a permit to replace my own gutters?"

Notice these are full questions, not keyword fragments. A page written to answer a question like this directly has a much better shot at being pulled into an AI-generated answer than a page written as generic ad copy.

What We Actually Work On

When we build AEO into a site, it comes down to a handful of concrete things, not a secret formula:

  • Direct-answer paragraphs placed near the top of key pages, written the way you'd actually answer the question out loud
  • FAQ sections written as real question-and-answer pairs, using the actual language homeowners use
  • Structured data, specifically FAQPage and Service schema, so machines can read the question-and-answer pairs cleanly
  • Consistent business information, name, services, and service area, stated the same way across every page of the site

What We Don't Promise

No agency, including us, can guarantee that an AI assistant, Google's AI Overviews, or any similar tool will recommend your business by name. These systems make their own decisions based on models we don't control and can't reverse-engineer with certainty. What we can do is make sure your business's information is accurate, consistent, and structured in a way these tools can actually use. Anyone who promises you'll be "the answer" every time is promising something outside their control.

Where This Fits Into Your Website

AEO isn't a separate product bolted onto your site. It's one part of a broader search visibility approach that also includes standard SEO and structured data work across your whole site. If you want the fuller picture of how we approach search visibility, that's covered on our Search Visibility page.
